Ulyanovsk area

Geographical location
Ulyanovsk region borders on Saratov region in the south, on Penza region in the south-west and the west, on the republic of Mordovia in the north-west, on the republics of Chuvashia and Tatarstan in the north, on Samara region in the east and south-east.
Main rivers are the Volga with its tributaries: the Sura and the Sviyaga.
The climate is temperate continental.

Administrative division
Ulyanovsk region is divided into 20 districts, 3 towns of the regional submission, 3 towns of district submission, 32 town settlements, 284 villages.
Centre of the region is the town of Ulyanovsk (till 1924 it had the name Simbirsk). The town was founded in 1648. Distance to Moscow is 893 km.
