Stavropol territory
Geographical location
Stavropol region is situated in the central part of Perdkavkazja and on the northern range of the Big Caucasus. The region borders on the republic of the Northern Osetia, the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria and Georgia in the south, on Krasnodar region in the south-west and the west, on Rostov region in the north, on the republic of Kalmykya in the north-east, on the republic of Dagestan in the east, on Chechnya and Ingushetia in the south-east.
The climate is continental.
Administrative division
The region was founded in 1924.The region is divided into 26 districts, 10 towns of the regional submission, 8 towns of district submission, 7 town settlements, 267 villages. Centre of the region is the town of Stavropol, founded in 1777. Distance to Moscow is 1,621 km. Main towns: Stavropol, Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk.
