The Republic of Khakasia
Geographical location
The republic of Khakasia is situated in the south of Eastern Siberia. Length of the republic from north to south is 400 km, from west to east - 200 km. Khakasia borders on Krasnoyarsk region in the north and the east, on the republic of Tyva in the south-west, on the republic of Mountainous Altai in the south-west, on Kemerovj region in the west.
The republic is divided into two parts: mountainous and steppes. The largest rivers are the Enisei and the Abakan. More than 40% of the republic is covered by forests.
The climate is sharp continental with cold winter and hot summer.
Khakasia is rich in minerals. There are supplies of coal, iron ore, different building materials: marble, gypsum, limestone, clay.
Administrative division
The republic is divided into 8 districts, 3 towns of the republican submission, 2 towns of district submission, 17 town settlements, 68 villages.
Capital of the republic is the town of Abakan. It was founded in 1931. Distance to Moscow is 4,218 km. The population of the republic is about 582.4 thousand people. Density of population is 9.4 persons per sq. km. The natives of the republic is Khakasses.
