The Republic of Northern Ossetia
Geographical location
The Republic of Northern Ossetia is situated in the northern range of the Big Caucasus. Length of the territory from north to south is 120 km, from west to east is 125 km. The republic borders on the republic of Georgia in the south, on the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in the west, on Stavropol region in the north, on the republic of Ingushetia in the east.
Ossetia is mountainous region.
The largest river is the Terek. Forests cover about 22% of the republic.
Fauna of the republic is diverse. There is a sanctuary.
The climate is temperate continental. Winter is short and mild, summer is hot.
In the republic there are reserves of ore, building materials and mineral waters.
Administrative division
The republic is divided into 8 districts, 2 towns of the republican submission, 4 towns of district submission, 7 town settlements, 91 villages.
Capital of the republic is the town of Vladikavkaz. It was founded in 1784. Distance to Moscow is 1,923 km.
