The Republic of Bashkortostan

Geographical location
The Republic of Bashkortostan is situated in the southern part of the Urals. Major part of the republic is in the forest-steppe zone, the northern - in the forest zone.

Natural resources
More than 40% of the territory is covered by forests. In the Republic there are oil, iron ore, copper, gold, zinc, aluminum, coal, gas, salt, limestone, gypsum and other minerals.

Administrative division
The Republic is divided into 54 administrative districts, 20 cities and towns, 41 town settlements. The capital of the Republic is Ufa.
Area: 143,600 square km, the 24th largest area in Russia. Population - 4105.8 thousand people. Density of population is 28.5 persons per sq. km. 64.6% of people live in towns.

Science and education
Science plays an important role in development of economics of the Republic. In Bashkortostan there are 100 research and planning institutes, laboratories, 9 state higher educational establishments. Academy of Sciences has been founded in the Republic.
