Perm region

Geographical location
Perm region is situated in the east of the Russian plain, in the junction of Europe and Asia. It occupies 160,236,5 sq. km and covers approximately 1/5 of the Ural economic region. The territory of the region is located in the basin of the river Kama, which provides the exit to 5 seas (the Caspian, Azov, Black, Baltic and White). Length from north to south is 645 km, form west to east - 417.5 km. The region borders on the republic of Komi in the north, on Kirov region and Udmurtia in the west, on Bashkortostan in the south, on Sverdlovsk region in the east.
The climate is temperate continental. Winters are snowy and long, summers are warm. Changeable weather influences the development of agriculture in Perm region.

Natural resources
There are a lot of different minerals in the region. More than 160 fields of hydrocarbon raw materials, among them 89 oil-fields, 3 gas-fields and 18 oil-gas fields. Coal has been mining during 200 years. In Perms region there is a unique field of potassium salt, one of the biggest in the world. Its area is 1800 sq. km. There are also reserves of iron and copper ore. Gold was found in the Middle Ural. Diamonds are mined in the north of the region. Its quality is very high. Limestone, gypsum, clay, sands, marble, gravel are widely used in industry and construction.

Administrative division
Perm region was founded on 3 October 1938. The region is divided into 36 administrative districts, 25 towns (13 of regional submission), 56 town settlements and 516 villages. Administrative centre of the region is Perm (1096.1 people).

Science and education
In the region there are 18 state and 3 private higher educational establishments. 48.2 thousand students study in the state institutions and 1156 students - in private ones.
