Novgorod region is situated in the north-west of the Russian plain. Length from west to east is 385 km, from north to south is 250 km. It borders on Pskov, Tver, Leningrad, Vologda regions.
Area - 55.3 thousand sq. km.
Population - 744 thousand people. Administrative and industrial centre of the region is Novgorod (231.7 thousand people).
Climate of Novgorod region is temperate continental.

Natural resources
The region is rich in mineral springs, cure-mud. But the major wealth of the region is forest. It covers 42% of the region's territory. There are 83 fields of clay, limestone, sands, mineral dyes, peat.
There are 7 fields of fresh subterranean waters.

Administrative division
The region is divided into 21 districts, 3 towns of regional submission, 7 towns of district submission, 22  town settlements, 278 villages.
Centre of the region is the town of Novgorod. It was founded in 859. Distance to Moscow is 606 km.
