Kursk area
Geographical location
Kursk region is situated in the Middle Russian highland. It borders on the Ukraine in the south-west, on Belgorod region in the south, on Bryansk, Orel, Lipetsk and Voronezh regions.
Main rivers: rivers of basin of the Dnieper and the Don.
Climate is temperate continental.
Administrative division
The region was founded on June 13, 1934. Area is 29.8 thousand sq. km. Kursk region is divided into 28 districts. There are 5 towns of regional submission, 5 towns of district submission, 23 town settlements, 444 villages.
Centre of the region is Kursk. It was founded in 1095. Distance to Moscow is 536 km.
Main towns are Kursk, Zheleznogorsk, Kurchatov.
Population of Kursk region is 1,332,4 thousand people. Density of population is 44.7 persons per sq. km.
Culture
Kursk attracts talented people of art, theatre, literature, music. Such outstanding persons as M. S. Shchepkin, P. I. Chaikovsky, L. N. Tolstoy, N. N. Aseev, A. A. Deineka lived and worked in Kurskaya region.
